In the rich tapestry of Jyotisha astrology, the concept of Karma takes center stage. Karma, derived from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘The Fruit of Action’, encapsulates the intricate web of cause and effect that governs our lives. According to Vedic culture, our actions, both physical and mental, emit unseen influences into the universe, shaping our present circumstances and future destinies.
The Jyotisha birthchart, or Kundali, serves as a cosmic roadmap, revealing the Karma that is returning to us at each moment and the Karma we may be generating. But here’s the fascinating part: the Vedic Rishis recognized that it’s possible to perform actions that do not create Karma, known as Nishkarma Kriya.
Take the timeless example of Arjuna at the battle of Kurukshetra, as recounted in the Bhagavad Gita.
Arjuna rues the bad Karma he will create by fighting the battle, but his guide, Lord Krishna, tells him that his Role, Dharma, is to destroy the evil embodied in the forces of the enemy, and that, specifically, under His, Lord Krishna’s guidance, he will incur no Karma. On the contrary, if he refuses to fight, and if evil wins, he will be personally responsible, and incur all the bad Karma that would result.
This illustrates the complexity of Karma and the importance of aligning with one’s divine purpose.
Karma is by no means a simple thing to evaluate, and that ‘One Man’s Meat may well turn out to be another Man’s Poison’.
In fact, Lord Krishna explicitly says that one should not yearn after the life path, Dharma, of another person. One’s role in the Life of Humanity is God-given, and one should accept it as such.
Enlightened souls, who have attained spiritual liberation, act in harmony with the divine will and incur no Karma. Their actions flow from a state of ‘Right Bearing Truth’, transcending the duality of good and bad Karma. The source of their ability to do this is explained at the end of the first Pada, chapter, of the famous text on Yoga, the Yoga Sutras of Maharishi Patanjali. The level, at which aspiring Yogis can ‘cognize’ divine instructions, akin to those given to Arjuna by Lord Krishna, is called, ‘Ritambhara Pragya’ – the level of ‘Right Bearing Truth’.
Now, let’s apply these cosmic principles to our relationships with friends and relatives. Our interactions with others generate Karma, both positive and negative, shaping the course of our lives. The Karma we’ve accumulated inevitably brings us back into contact with souls from past lives, presenting us with opportunities to resolve old debts and fulfill our spiritual evolution.
Our closest relatives, such as parents, siblings, or children, are often souls with whom we have shared profound connections in previous incarnations. Our present life offers a chance to reconcile past Karma and deepen our understanding of love, compassion, and forgiveness.
Through practices like Yoga Dhyana, or deep meditation, we can attune ourselves to the guiding voice of the divine within, paving the way for spiritual liberation and ultimate fulfillment.
Fascinatingly, the Kundali can reveal the Karma that is acting on us at each point in our life. That is achieved by combining both the perspective of the time periods in our lives, the Grahas governing our Dasha and Antadasha periods, and the transits of the various Grahas, planets, etc., across the various houses in our Kundali, i.e. their positions at each point in time.
